Silicone like a pro: the masking tape trick

A straight, smooth bead of sealant every time, with two strips of tape and a wet finger.

Hands running a smooth bead of silicone along a worktop between strips of masking tape

A neat bead of silicone is mostly about preparation.

  1. Cut out all the old sealant. New silicone won’t stick to old.
  2. Clean and dry the joint, ideally overnight.
  3. Run two strips of masking tape, one on each side of the joint, 3 mm apart.
  4. Fill the bath with water first if it’s a bath, so it’s at its lowest when the sealant sets.
  5. Run the bead in one go, smooth it with a wet finger, and pull the tape off straight away.

Leave it 24 hours before the first shower.
