Why your tap drips (and when to call me)

Most drips are a worn washer or cartridge. Here's how to tell which, and when it's worth a visit.

A single drop falling from a chrome kitchen tap into a sink

A dripping tap wastes about 5,000 litres a year. Usually it’s one of two things.

Older taps with two handles

These have a rubber washer that wears out. Turn off the water under the sink, unscrew the handle and the headgear, and swap the washer: they come in packs of ten for a pound or two.

Mixer taps with a lever

These have a ceramic cartridge. They last for years, but when they go, you need the exact one for your tap, which is where most people call me.

Either way: if the water won’t turn off under the sink, don’t start. Call me instead.
